Fostering Geriatrics in Pre-Licensure Nursing Education (ACES)

2007-2012 Because most nurses working at the bedside have an associate degree and receive their education at community colleges of nursing, the Hartford Foundation wanted to ensure that these nurses have the knowledge and skills to provide good care for older adults.

Funding was provided to the National League of Nursing and the Community College of Philadelphia for an initiative, led by M. Elaine Tagliareni, EdD, RN, to develop minimum educational standards and resources for the care of older adults and to create faculty development training. The Independence Foundation, Laerdal Medical, and the Hearst Foundation have been funding partners for this initiative.

A set of tools and resources called Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES) was developed to assist associate degree and baccalaureate nursing faculty to incorporate geriatrics into their educational materials. By 2012, over 8,000 nursing faculty members had participated in faculty development workshops.
