On April 19th, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement begins a 5-part Virtual Expedition relating to the integration of behavioral health and medical care. While efforts to integrate behavioral health and medical care have generally focused on the primary care setting, integration is needed across the continuum, including inpatient medical units.

To support health care organizations and health systems in developing an integrated medical and behavioral health service in inpatient units, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is convening leading experts and innovators from around the country to take a deep dive into some of the core competencies and skills organizations will need to implement this approach to care at their organization. Starting April 19, 2017, the IHI Virtual Expedition: From Consultation to Integration: Addressing Behavioral Health in the Hospital offers five 60-minute virtual trainings that will enable attendees to:

  1. Understand the impact of proactively addressing patients’ behavioral health needs in hospital settings
  2. Describe the core components of successful approaches to integrate behavioral health and medical care in hospital units
  3. Define a strategy and identify change ideas to test and implement this model of care at their organization
