Many older adults experience conditions, such as dementia, that impair the ability to self-report pain. In these special populations, assessment approaches must be used that rely on other sources of data, including behavioral or nonverbal expressions of pain. Untreated pain in non-verbal populations impairs functioning and quality of life, and special attention is required to effectively manage pain in this vulnerable population.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe a hierarchical approach for assessing pain in non-verbal populations, including the use of pain behavior assessment tools.
  2. Discuss recommendations for the treatment of pain in this population utilizing multi-modal approaches.
