A new Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) article discusses the history of The John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry and their impact on the field of geriatrics and geriatric training.

The John A. Hartford Foundation created the Centers of Excellence in 1988 with the goal of establishing academic training environments to increase geriatrics-trained faculty. The American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) has served as the national coordinating center for the program.

The article reports that the initiative has strengthened the national network of geriatrics programs and has served as a major driver of increased prestige for the fields of geriatric medicine and psychiatry.
