Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of The John A. Hartford Foundation in New York City, shares the deep concerns of so many citizens worried about the Trump administration's proposed funding reductions for national safety net programs:

"Nearly 6.3 million older adults, or 15 percent of the senior population, rely on Medicaid for nursing home care and other services in the community. Surely our most vulnerable older adults are fearful about these proposed cuts and are right to be worried if these changes are enacted.

“The proposed $610 billion in reductions to Medicaid funding over 10 years, on top of the more than $800 billion in cuts proposed through repeal of the Affordable Care Act, would be devastating to those seeking relief from escalating long-term care expenses. The proposed elimination of relatively low-cost programs for rural hospitals and geriatrics workforce training would also greatly diminish the nation's ability to provide desperately needed care to older adults and their families.”
