CMS Proposed Rule: Public Comment Invited on Two Geriatrics Hospital Measures

Federal Register Proposed Rule

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sought comment on its fiscal year 2024 Hospital Inpatient Reporting Program proposed rule, which includes two new geriatrics hospital measures that can help ensure age-friendly care for older adults. Comments were due June 9. JAHF encouraged grantees and partners to submit comments on these two measures that are described in a Health Affairs Forefront article by JAHF's Rani Snyder and Terry Fulmer.

A new geriatric hospital measure (MUC2022–112) and geriatric surgery measure (MUC2022–032) are included on pp. 446-447 of the proposed rule and are derived from three JAHF initiatives backed by evidence of outcomes beneficial to the health and well-being of older hospital patients: Age-Friendly Health Systems, Geriatric Surgery Verification, and Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation. These programs have shown reductions in hospital costs, length of stay, and decreased risk of loss of independence and major complications for older adults.

A templated letter of support was available to assist in the submission of public comments, which were due by June 9, 2023.
