CMS Data Shows High Level of Demand for Advance Care Planning

C-TAC

A Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC) blog post discusses that new CMS data show that more than 1% of the 56 million Medicare population made use of advance care planning appointments in 2016.

The data set illustrates a high level of demand for advance care planning services among Medicare beneficiaries. It is the first year such services were billable, and the utilization rate of these services exceeded expectations by nearly 100%. However, many clinicians are still not aware of the approval of the 2016 Medicare reimbursement agreement, partly contributing to the small number of population using this benefit.
