AP Article: 1 in 5 Nursing Homes Short on PPE and Staff in Virus Rebound
The Associated Press has published an article that was widely distributed in The New York Times and other outlets, "1 in 5 Nursing Homes Short on PPE and Staff in Virus Rebound."
The article centers around a study published in Health Affairs which found that about 20% of U.S. nursing homes faced severe shortages of protective gear like N95 masks this summer in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, together with a similarly high rate reporting staff shortages, and no improvement in these shortages from May to July.
Analysis undertaken by researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health on data provided by nursing homes to the government is also discussed and experts are interviewed. The John A. Hartford Foundation's president Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, is quoted, “A study that shows that 1 in 5 nursing homes has a severe shortage of PPE and a shortage of staff, and that it did not change from May to July, should be a massive red flag.”
