Nominations Open for 2021 Speak Up for Better Health Award
The Center for Consumer Engagement in Health Innovation at Community Catalyst (The Center) is soliciting nominations for its 2021 Speak Up for Better Health Award, which celebrates the accomplishments of people who have worked to make the health system more equitable and responsive.
In a time of heightened awareness and demand for health justice and racial equity, The Center is seeking nominations that lift up individuals and advocates who are using their voices to make the health system more just and equitable. The work of those most hurt by our health system, including people of color, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, women, immigrants and older adults, are of particular interest. Here are a few examples of what that might look like:
- Working to bring COVID-19 testing, diagnosis, treatment and vaccination resources to underserved neighborhoods and populations, particularly communities of color.
- Launching or leading grassroots efforts to educate and engage their health system on community needs, particularly related to historical and structural racism in health care.
- Advocating for action from health systems on the social determinants of health, like affordable housing, better transportation services, or greater food security in low-income communities.
- Pushing for education and resources to help people avoid and overcome crushing medical debt.
Speak Up for Better Health Award nominations are being accepted until October 29, 2021 and winners will be announced in early December. The panel of judges is:
- Denny Chan, Justice in Aging's Inaugural Directing Attorney for Equity Advocacy
- Joia A. Crear-Perry, MD, FACOG, NBEC's Founder and President
- Marcus Escobedo, MPA, JAHF's VP Communications and Senior Program Officer
- Colin Killick, Disability Policy Consortium's Executive Director
- Monica Valdes Lupi, JD, MPH, Kresge Foundation's Managing Director for Health
- Alan Weil, Health Affairs' Editor-in-Chief
