Journal of Professional Nursing Guest Editorial: Nursing Homes for Nursing Education

Nursing homes for nursing education

The Journal of Professional Nursing has published a guest editorial, "Nursing homes for nursing education."

In the guest editorial, University of Pittsburgh's Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob and The John A. Hartford Foundation's Terry Fulmer urge for nursing homes to be embedded into nursing education curriculums for clinical experience opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate level students.

Undergraduate level nurses seldom have clinical experience in nursing homes even though the breadth of services offered in nursing homes (i.e. complex care, restorative care, supportive and palliative care) offer a rich learning opportunity for nursing students. Graduate level students also have learning opportunities within the nursing home, including a broader understanding of the care continuum for patients.

The authors encourage accrediting bodies for advance practice providers to provide clarity on the use of clinical site for practice hours and to specifically include nursing homes, a combination of long-term care, rehabilitation and post-acute care.
