ASA Generations Today: The ASA RISE Story

The ASA RISE Story

The American Society on Aging (ASA) has published a Generations Today special issue, "The ASA RISE Story."

The issue tells the story of ASA RISE, a 20-week fellowship program for rising leaders of color in the field of aging, through seven articles that share the why, its personal and professional impact, benefits to mentors, fellows and funders. Authors and articles include:

  • Patrice Dickerson, Fellowship Director, reflects on the evolution of ASA RISE and why its focus on equity will persist in Lessons Learned from ASA RISE.
  • RISE alum and Aging and Disability Rights supervisor Glenda Love shares the program’s impact on her personal and professional journeys in How ASA RISE Changed My Life.
  • Najja Orr shares How My Organization Benefited from ASA RISE from his unique vantage point as an ASA Board Member, NVL alum, and President and CEO of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, which has supported two staff members as RISE Fellows.
  • AARP’s Cassandra Cantave Burton lauds the value of mentorship from the perspective of lacking her own, and defines the values of intention, action and sponsorship in What ASA RISE Meant to Me as a Mentor.
  • Linda Revilla, RISE alum and acting executive director of Meals on Wheels by ACC asks and answers questions about time, dedication and chosen family in What ASA RISE Meant to Me as a Fellow.
  • In ASA RISE: The Funder’s Perspective, Serena Worthington from RRF Foundation on Aging describes how ASA RISE and similar programs already are, and will continue benefiting future generations of older people and the field of aging.
  • The issue closes with Peter Kaldes’ views of ASA RISE: An Anti-Woke Remedy, from society to workforce, from his perspective of generating the program as ASA’s previous President & CEO.

"There is impact, there is community, and there is magic in ASA RISE," said Leanne Clark-Shirley, PhD, ASA interim president & CEO. "I hope this series of articles helps each of you see it differently than before or perhaps for the first time. And we invite you to meet alums, fellows, mentors and partners at On Aging 2024, where ASA RISE will proudly shine!"

This program is supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation, RRF Foundation for Aging and Archstone Foundation.
