The Basics We and Policymakers Should Know About Nursing Homes

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has released a three-part article series on nursing home care. The series begins with an article on "The Basics We (and Policymakers) Should Know about Nursing Homes."

This informational series aims to fill in knowledge gaps about nursing home care, a commonly misunderstood service for older adults. Authors Alice Bonner and Amanda Meier explain basic terminology used in the United States and offer descriptions of different settings and services for older adults. "The Basics We (and Policymakers) Should Know about Nursing Homes" provides detailed information about who lives in nursing homes and what daily life is like for the 1.3 million residents.

In "Nursing Home Basics: Who Qualifies, Who Pays, and Other Helpful Facts," the authors answer some commonly asked questions about nursing home structures and functions.

In the "Nursing Home Basics: The Benefits of Age-Friendly Care for Residents and Staff," the authors explain more about age-friendly care in nursing homes, and talk about the benefits of providing care based on the Age-Friendly Health Systems 4Ms Framework.
