Moving Forward Coalition Conversation: Building Codes - A Powerful Tool for Shaping Tomorrow's Nursing Homes

Moving Forward Conversation Building Codes Feb2024 updated

The Moving Forward Coalition Nursing Home Quality Coalition (Moving Forward) is holding a Coalition Conversation February 22 on, "Building Codes: A Powerful Tool for Shaping Tomorrow's Nursing Homes."

The Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) oversees the development and revision of Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care and Supportive Facilities. Versions of these Guidelines - which are revised by committee every four years - are adopted as law in 43 states across the U.S. As such, changes made by FGI can have meaningful and measurable impacts on the construction and renovation of nursing homes and the quality of life of residents living in them.

The Coalition Conversation will hear from two FGI committee members:

  • Dr. Addie Abushousheh, organizational and environmental gerontologist and Research Associate for The Center for Health Design, tri-Chair for FGI’s Residential Design Guidelines, Advisor to the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community and Abacus Institute, adjunct faculty at Kent State University, Board Member of IDEAS Institute and a Committee Member for the Moving Forward Coalition.
  • Dr. Maggie Calkins, nationally recognized as a leader, educator and researcher in the field of environments for elders, President and Board Chair of IDEAS Institute, Committee Member for the Moving Forward Coalition, founding member of SAGE- Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments, and on the Editorial Board for The Gerontologist, Journal of Housing and the Elderly, Journal of Clinical Psychology and Health Environments Research & Design Journal.
  • John Williams, Vice President of content and outreach for the Facility Guidelines Institute, executive director of Facilities Construction and Licensing with the Washington State Department of Health. He chaired the International Code Council’s Healthcare Committee for 12 years and is currently the Chair of FGI’s Health Guidelines Revision Committee.

They will talk about:

  • Updates they're making to the FGI Guidelines in 2024
  • The impact the FGI Guidelines have had on nursing home quality historically
  • How the FGI Guidelines get adopted in states across the country
