Leading aging philanthropy urges Congress to address nursing home staffing, accountability, and transparency.

“The hearing recently conducted by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis marks a critical step toward accountability and action to improve America’s nursing homes.

“Through recommendations of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, policymakers have an actionable roadmap to address the most daunting issues facing nursing home staff, residents and their families. To improve the care that older adults receive, Congress must prioritize nursing home workforce development and funding. Lawmakers also must ensure adequate reimbursement for the cost of care, reliable data, and actions to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in nursing home care.

“The John A. Hartford Foundation is supporting implementation of the NASEM report’s recommendations through the work of the Moving Forward: Nursing Home Quality Coalition and stands ready to rapidly work with the public and private sectors to ensure that all nursing homes provide care that is high-quality, safe and equitable.”
