AARP Article: Why We Need Age-Friendly Public Health Systems

AFPHS article

AARP The Journal has published an article authored by TFAH CEO Nadine Gracia, MD, MSCE, and JAHF President Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, on "Why We Need Age-Friendly Public Health Systems."

"Driven by the Baby Boomer generation, the growth of the older adult population is unprecedented in U.S. history", the article notes, and explains the lack of adequate geriatric care and the need for a "robust public health system focused on prevention, preparedness, and wellness."

The authors then introduce the Age- Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) initiative, a movement lead by Trust for America's Health (TFAH) in partnership with JAHF that is "designed to create a culture of healthy aging within state and local public health departments and support the expansion of public health policies and programs to improve older adult health and well-being." Several programs of the AFPHS initiative are detailed including the AFPHS National Recognition Program, COVID-19 Response, In-Home Vaccinations Initiative, and Age-Friendly Ecosystems.
