National Skills Coalition Blog: An Aging America Needs a Stronger Care Workforce

National Skills Coalition Blog Direct Care Workers April 2025

The National Skills Coalition has published a blog authored by Robert Espinoza and JAHF's Rani Snyder that calls for investment in job quality, training, and support for the direct care workforce.

Direct care workers are a lifeline for millions of older adults, people with disabilities, and their family caregivers, providing vital support for daily activities and helping people live independently. This workforce is also aging, and one in four direct care workers are now over age 55. Older workers bring valuable experience to this growing field, but without systemic support, we risk losing them.

The authors discuss the challenges facing older direct care workers and make a compelling case for targeted investments in improved training, safety, and wages that can support them and the people they care for.
