Health Affairs Publishes Two Age Friendly Health Papers in Sept 1

Health Affairs has published two articles in September as part of its Age-Friendly Health series. One of the articles is on private equity acquisitions of hospices and the other article examined managed care plans among dual-eligible beneficiaries.

The Age-Friendly Health series aims to inform health policies and covers new issues related to building more equitable, high-quality health systems for older adults.

Private Equity Acquisitions Of Hospices Are Increasing; Ownership Remains Opaque by Melissa D. Aldridge, Lauren J. Hunt, Zelle Halloran and Krista L. Harrison
Private equity ownership across the US healthcare system is increasing, yet ownership structures are complex and opaque. The authors use an economic data set tracking mergers and acquisitions linked to Medicare data to identify private equity hospice acquisitions. Researchers need timely, transparent, validated data on hospice ownership to continue building the evidence base for high-quality end-of-life care.

Dual-Eligible Nursing Home Residents: Enrollment Growth In Managed Care Plans That Coordinate Care, 2013–20 by Eric T. Roberts, Xinwei Chen, Eliza Macneal and Rachel M. Werner
Dual-eligible beneficiaries have insurance through two distinct and uncoordinated programs: Medicaid, which pays for long-term care, and Medicare, which pays for medical care. Concern that this system leads to poor quality and inefficient care, especially for dual-eligible nursing home residences, has led policymakers to test managed care plans that provide incentives for coordinating care across Medicare and Medicaid. The authors examined enrollment in these managed care plans among dual-eligible long-term nursing home care beneficiaries. As policymakers pursue strategies to coordinate medical and long-term care, evaluating how these plans influence the care of dual-eligible nursing home residents is critical.
