National Family Caregivers Month
Every November, National Family Caregivers Month (NFCM) recognizes and honors family and friend caregivers. JAHF joins the Administration for Community Living, the Caregiver Action Network and other partners in the month-long campaign to raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities, and increase support for the more than 53 million caregivers across the country.
The Caregiver Action Network (CAN) leads the observance of National Family Caregivers Month and has selected #CaregiverAnd as this year's theme to encourage family caregivers to celebrate the passions and interests that enrich their lives.
In addition, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) is highlighting NFCM with social shares and links to information about the RAISE Family Caregiving Advisory Council. The RAISE Act Council is charged with providing recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services on effective models of both family caregiving and support to family caregivers, as well as improving coordination across federal government programs.
JAHF grantees produce resources to better serve family caregivers nationwide, including:
- Modules and training from the Diverse Elders Coalition help health care and social service organizations better meet the needs of diverse caregivers.
- A Model for Caregiver Health and Wellness in Age-Friendly Health Systems from Rush University Medical Center is engaging family caregivers in their own health care through a 4Ms approach.
- Shared access to electronic health records through the OpenNotes Shared Access Project supports family caregivers in managing the care of older adults.
- Technical assistance, peer-to-peer learning, and resource dissemination from the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) are helping states strengthen caregiver policies and programs.
- Educating nurse practitioners on dementia care management in diverse health systems is part of the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program’s partnership with national organizations like EDC.
- The Family Caregiver Alliance published a series of blogs and infographics about specific dementia caregiving programs in Best Practice Caregiving, an online resource for health care and social service organizations.
- A series of how-to videos from AARP prepares family caregivers for a hospital stay.
- A recording of a recent training on Caregiving as a Public Health Priority by Trust for America's Health Age-Friendly Public Health Systems initiative.
