TFAH Age-Friendly Public Health Systems 2024 Webinar Series
Trust for America's Health (TFAH) is hosting a series of free webinars, open to all, as part of their monthly Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) training series continuing from 2023. The next AFPHS webinar training December 12 will highlight partnerships between libraries and departments of health.
The training series provides guidance on implementing each of the AFPHS 6Cs (based on the 6Cs Framework). Each session highlights specific examples of public health programs, policies, and other activities that align with the 6Cs and advance healthy aging as a core function.
The 2024 AFPHS series of trainings will provide context on the intersection of equity with several key public health topics.
Libraries are innovation hubs that continue to develop and execute programs in the community. Many of these programs are geared toward older adults. Local departments of health have developed strong relationships with libraries to provide opportunities for social engagement and a central location for community-based resources. The December AFPHS training will highlight partnerships between libraries and departments of health, and strategies on how to start partnering with local libraries.
Previous 2024 trainings:
- November 21 focused on how public health can partner with Tribal communities. The Washington State Department of Health worked with the Northwest Washington Indian Health Board to collect data on the needs of older adults in Tribal communities. The process for steps and process for this collaboration were highlighted.
- October 17 featured some of the YMCA programs and partnerships that not only improve older adult health but also foster equitable healthy aging.
- September 18 focused on mental health and substance use among older adults, with key findings and policy recommendations from TFAH’s Pain in the Nation report. Equitable approaches to support older adults will also be shared.
- August 15 highlighted age-friendly efforts led by academic institutions and opportunities for public health and academic partnerships.
- July 18 focused on housing and older adults. The presentation incorporated recent research and insights from a report, Housing America’s Older Adults 2023, by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. This training webinar aimed to help practitioners use a housing lens to consider the social determinants of older adult health.
- June 20 focused on TFAH's brief, "How the 10 Essential Public Health Services Align with the AFPHS 6Cs Framework for Supporting Healthy Aging." The webinar gave an overview of the alignment between the two frameworks, including common language and a shared focus on equity, with examples of policies and healthy aging strategies.
- May 16 in alignment with the Older Americans Month theme of "Powered By Connection" - focused on equitable strategies to promote connection among older people. The speaker for this training was Phil Bors, Senior Project Director with Healthy Places by Design.
- April 18 offered an overview of Trust for America’s Health’s Ready or Not 2024 report that measures states’ preparedness to respond to a spectrum of health emergencies and to provide ongoing public health services. It included information on protecting older adults during heat emergencies, with examples of state and local preparedness strategies that align with the AFPHS 6Cs Framework.
- March 21 featured insights on how to prioritize equity within healthy aging practice in public health. Representatives from California and Tennessee shared examples of how they are operationalizing equity in their states.
- February 15 addressed the intersection of equity and healthy aging, with examples of integrating equity in community programs to support the health and well-being of older adults. Ensuring all older adults have an equitable opportunity to live healthy lives is foundational to age-friendly public health.
- January 18 was AFPHS's Annual Training on Ageism. It provided context on how mitigating ageism is also a way to improve equity.
