Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

Grant Summary

The John A. Hartford Foundation Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Building Initiative, approved by the Foundation's Board of Trustees in March 2000, has three components: support for five Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence awards for pre- and post-doctoral scholars in geriatric nursing and a coordinating center to support the overall effort. The Centers' concept recognizes the need for a critical mass of gerontological nursing activity in the areas of research, teaching and clinical care in order to produce tomorrow's academic leadership. Projects funded under the initiative will work in tandem with the Hartford Institute for the Advancement of Gerontological Nursing Practice, which was funded at a level of $5 million for five years in 1996, to strengthen the nation's academic and service capacity. The six projects under the new Initiative are described below.
