Nursing Initiative Coordinating Center and Scholar Stipends

Grant Summary

An award to the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) will provide coordination for the Foundation"s initiative to build America"s academic geriatric nursing capacity and support 35 doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. Funds for the nursing scholars program will provide two years of support for three cohorts of 10 doctoral and 10 post-doctoral scholars, to be chosen annually. This program also includes scholarships for up to five nursing scholars who wish to pursue advanced study leading to health care management careers. As part of its overall CGNE coordinating effort, the AAN will also sponsor a consensus conference on the geriatric training and preparation of advanced practice nurses and implement a leadership development program. Awards to create John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (CGNEs), designed to strengthen geriatrics at nursing schools which have already made a sustained commitment in this area, will be considered by the Foundation"s Trustees by the end of the year. As part of its overall CGNE coordinating effort, the AAN will also sponsor a planning conference on the geriatric training and preparation of advanced practice nurses and implement a leadership development program on behalf of current and future awardees.Funds for the nursing scholars program will provide two years of support for three cohorts of 10 doctoral and 10 post-doctoral scholars, to be chosen annually. This program also includes scholarships for up to five nursing scholars who wish to pursue advanced study leading to healthcare management careers involving services for older adults.
