STATEMENT ON CMS ‘GUIDE’ MODEL FOR COMPREHENSIVE DEMENTIA CARE

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on July 31, 2023 issued tools and guidance for comprehensive dementia care: Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE)

“The new model for how Medicare will deliver and pay for comprehensive dementia care represents a watershed moment for people with dementia and their family caregivers, who are so often left out of the conversation. The GUIDE model can transform care for millions of families living with dementia, helping them get the care and respite they desperately need in the communities they call home.

“This is a powerful step toward truly comprehensive dementia care, which The John A. Hartford Foundation has long championed. Notably and necessarily, the model will help improve equity in access to care for underserved communities by addressing unpaid caregiver needs, including respite services and screening for health-related social needs.

“Comprehensive dementia care supports both the medical and non-medical needs of patients and their family caregivers. It’s age-friendly care that prioritizes the needs and preferences of the patient and their family members. We commend CMS for its diligence in advancing this model through which we can ensure that older persons with dementia and their families have a truly comprehensive and humane approach to care.”
