AJN Article: What Lies Ahead for Nursing

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) has published an article, "What Lies Ahead for Nursing," featuring interviews with nurse leaders from diverse practice areas to see how their thinking about the future had shifted as 2020 drew to a close.

The author reached out to ten nurse leaders including Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, President of The John A. Hartford Foundation. This is the third in a series of three articles written by Nicole Fauteux for AJN exploring the ways in which frontline nurses might be affected by recommendations of the forthcoming National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Future of Nursing 2020-2030 study.

The paper notes, "Not surprisingly, most shared observations related to the pandemic and the social justice movement, but many of their comments were far-ranging and unexpected. They touched on how models of care might evolve, how payment reforms could advance health equity, and how technology could improve education and practice. Notably, one called for professional nurses to invite LPNs and direct care workers to the table as the profession charts a course forward."
