A story on the issue of hospital observation status is being aired by NBC News tonight, and was discussed by Congressman Joe Courtney, D-Connecticut, and the Center for Medicare Advocacy's Judith Stein in an OpEd in The Hill today.

Both stories report on new requirements for hospitals to tell people orally and in writing that they are "under observation," and thus potentially liable for much larger bills that aren't covered by Medicare. More than 1 million patients will get these Medicare Outpatient Observation Notices (MOONs) every year, according to federal estimates.

The John A. Hartford Foundation provides support to the Center for Medicare Advocacy under the grant, "Reducing Harm to Medicare Beneficiaries - Improving Hospital Observation Status and Other Policies."
