Documentary Film Discussion: Aging in America - Survive or Thrive
Join The John A. Hartford Foundation for a lunchtime viewing of scenes from a new documentary, Aging in America: Survive or Thrive, and a discussion about aging in the United States and policy opportunities. The event will be in Washington, DC, on April 10. Please email your interest in attending.
The film features older adults and family caregivers across the country as they navigate the complexities of aging in America, along with insightful commentary from experts in aging.
The event will be held on Thursday April 10, 11:30am-1pm, at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, SVC 203-2, Washington, DC. Lunch will be available beginning at 11:30am. The event will start at 12pm.
Panelists will highlight key achievements in aging policy made throughout the 20th century and ask: what work remains to help older adults living in America not just survive, but thrive?

Background:
- Older adults are living and working longer, redefining what it means to age in America.
- Significant policy advancements in the past century have improved the lives of older adults, including innovative approaches to health care, support for caregivers and families and the development of programs that support older adults in their communities.
- Fifty years ago, there were 23 million Americans over the age of 65. Today there are 55 million. More older adults than ever are enrolled in Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, three of America’s largest domestic expenditures.
About the Film:
- Aging in America: Survive or Thrive, a one-hour documentary narrated by Martin Sheen airing on PBS starting May 1, examines the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly aging population. Using Dr. Robert Butler’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Why Survive? Being Old in America as a guide, the film explores critical topics such as ageism, healthcare, economic insecurity and Alzheimer’s disease. Featuring renowned experts and personal stories, the documentary celebrates the promise of increased longevity while addressing crucial and unprecedented public policy challenges.
