On April 16, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius announced a major reorganization of the federal programs on aging and disability with the creation of the new Administration for Community Living (ACL), bringing together the Administration on Aging, the Office on Disability and the Administration on Developmental Disabilities into a single agency that supports both cross-cutting initiatives and efforts focused on the unique needs of individual groups, such as children with developmental disabilities or seniors with dementia. This new agency will seek to enhance and improve the range of support that individuals may need to live with respect and dignity as members of their communities. These needs include the availability of appropriate housing, employment, education, meaningful relationships and social participation." Assistant Secretary for Aging Kathy Greenlee will serve in a dual role that includes her current position as well as the Administrator of new ACL.
While coordination to meet the needs of older adults is broadly supported, some have wondered what this means for the aging network. Combined with lack of action on the reauthorization on the Older Americans Act, will this mean less emphasis on aging at the federal level? How will the new agency actually work? Will future Assistant Secretaries for Aging retain this dual responsibility? Secretary Greenlee will join us to discuss the rationale for the change and plans for the future of aging and disability services.
Speaker:
Kathy Greenlee serves the dual roles of Administrator of the Administration for Community Living and Assistant Secretary for Aging. Ms. Greenlee was appointed by President Obama as Assistant Secretary for Aging at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and confirmed by the Senate in June 2009.
This month's Conversations with GIA webinar is sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York.
The American Society on Aging is producing this event and will host the recorded program.
