Report: Elder Mistreatment Emergency Department Feasibility Case Study - Eastern Niagara Hospital

ENH GEDC

The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) has released a feasibility case study report by the National Collaboratory to Address Elder Mistreatment, "Elder Mistreatment Emergency Department (EMED) Feasibility Case Study: Eastern Niagara Hospital."

The National Collaboratory to Address Elder Mistreatment implemented the EMED Toolkit at Eastern Niagara Hospital (ENH), a small community hospital located in Lockport, a small town in western New York State that primarily serves a rural population. ENH has 134 in-patient and 8 emergency department (ED) beds and an annual ED census of approximately 14,000 patients; 32% of ED patients are adults aged 60 years or older.

ENH participated in the initial implementation of the EMED Toolkit with support from the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York. The ENH ED team wanted to improve their care for older adults at risk of or experiencing mistreatment and the report details how the hospital is using the toolkit to identify & address elder mistreatment.

This case study is part of a series of medical center and hospital case study reports on implementing the Elder Mistreatment Toolkit designed by the National Collaboratory to Address Elder Mistreatment. Read all five case studies:
