JAGS Editorial: Let It Rain - The American College of Surgeons Geriatric Surgery Verification Program
The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) has published an editorial, "Let It Rain: The American College of Surgeons Geriatric Surgery Verification Program."
In the editorial, Mark R. Katlic, MD, MMM, FACS, talks about the response of staff in his hospital to the Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) Program of the American College of Surgeons. The GSV is a standardized surgical quality improvement framework and Dr. Katlic comments that, "we have been hungry for these changes in the way that we care for older adults."
"There is excitement around the GSV as it seems to have provided the push needed to bring about even better care, to make standard some processes that were being done occasionally...Among the 30 GSV standards, for example, is the mandate for a life‐sustaining treatment discussion for patients with planned intensive care unit (ICU) admission; this must be documented in the medical record and revisited at least every 3 days. Our ICU providers and nurses, stating that they have wanted this for years but just needed a push, have already instituted this."
