McKnight's Long-Term Care News has published an article, "Elevating the Role of Nursing Homes in Clinical Training Can Boost Student, Resident Experiences."

This article discusses how the Teaching Nursing Home (TNH) model successfully placed nursing students in clinical rotations, leading to improved gerontological nursing skills and confidence in assessment, interview, medication review, assessing resident values, and health promotion skills.

The TNH model connects nursing homes and schools of nursing and infuses Age-Friendly Health Systems principles into residents’ plans of care to improve delivery of care and quality of the educational experience. Over the two-year pilot demonstration at four nursing homes in Pennsylvania, 591 residents received 4Ms-based care and 677 staff members received AFHS 4Ms training. The pilot also increased faculty engagement at nursing schools, and now works in coordination with additional partners, such as the Moving Forward Coalition.

A second, ongoing phase of the program aims to deepen relationships between schools of nursing and nursing homes within PA and on the national stage through the development of the Teaching Nursing Home Collaborative.
