NAC and AARP Report: Family Caregivers of Adults Age 50+
The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) and AARP have released Family Caregivers of Adults Age 50+, a companion report to Caregiving in the US 2025.
More than 51 million Americans, nearly 1 in 5 adults, are now caring for someone age 50 or older, making up the majority of family caregivers nationwide.
Among the findings:
- Caregivers of older adults now provide care for an average of 5 years, up from 3.9 years in 2020, and 23% are providing 40+ hours of care per week.
- Six in 10 perform medical or nursing tasks for their care recipient.
- More than 4 in 10 have experienced a negative financial impact from caregiving, and 64% report emotional stress tied to their caregiving role.
- Still, caregiving carries meaning alongside the strain—about half of caregivers say they feel a real sense of purpose in the role.
