In order to provide the best care possible, nurses need to become "full partners" in shaping the nation's health care system, according to The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, released by the Institute of Medicine. The report, developed by the Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, looked at challenges the profession faces as the number of Americans covered by health insurance increases and as the population ages.
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) is on the forefront of transforming leadership in the nursing profession, as called for in the IOM report, through its leadership academies.
2012-2013 Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy cohort
Twelve individuals from nine states have selected 12 mentors from 10 states for the upcoming 18-month GNLA, which will be conducted from June 2012 to November 2013.
For the first time, this session's cohort includes participants from Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee.
The Mentors will guide Fellows through a blended curriculum that provides a multitude of methodologies for developing leadership knowledge and competence, with a focus on individual leadership, advanced nursing practice through team leadership, and organizational scope of influence.
"The GNLA gives nurses the skills and experience they need to make a critical difference in the lives of older adults," says STTI President Suzanne Prevost, PhD, RN, COI. "These new leaders emerge uniquely qualified to advocate for change that is based on an intimate understanding of patients' needs and the bedside impact of public policy."
