Next Avenue has published an article, "You Shouldn’t Need a Golden Ticket to Stay Mobile as You Age," by Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, President of The John A. Hartford Foundation.

Contrary to the 1971 movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Dr. Fulmer says that a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity should not be needed for an older adult to get up and moving. "Unfortunately, this was our approach to mobility for too long. Older patients’ deteriorating mobility was taken as inevitable."

The article talks about changing attitudes: the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative prioritizes older patients’ mobility in the planning and delivery of care. There are programs which get hospital patients up and moving every day, and group exercise sessions. Hospitals and health systems in the initiative are focusing on older patients’ mobility as one part of the 4Ms framework that guides the initiative.
