NIGN and the NGNA Webinar: Falls With Injuries and Older Adults
The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and the National Gerontological Nursing Association have developed a webinar series to help enhance and improve the care for older adults. The one-hour live webinars will be held throughout the year, each month, and then are available archived on the Hartford Institute e-Learning center. The next webinar on March 27, 2014 at 1pm ET will address falls with injuries and older adults. Falls are a nursing sensitive quality indicator and nursing staff have the greatest impact to improve outcomes. Older adults present to the acute care setting with various risk factors which place them at higher risk for sustaining an injury if they fall while hospitalized. This webinar will focus on risk factor assessment and best practice targeted interventions to reduce the risk of injury. The role of the Fall Risk Reduction Team and methods to evaluate the hospital's Fall Program will be described.

Objectives:
- Identify patient fall risk factors and assess these factors using an evidence-based fall risk assessment rating tool.
- Implement best practice interventions to decrease patient falls (and injury from patient falls) by targeting risk factors.
- Review institutional and unit data on patient falls to improve patient outcomes.
- Describe methods to evaluate fall risk reduction structures and processes.
