Trust for America's Health (TFAH) is hosting a series of free webinars, open to all, as part of their monthly Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) training series continuing from 2022. The most recent webinar was held on December 14 on Complementing Existing Health Promoting Programs. The series will continue in 2024.

The 2023 AFPHS training series is providing guidance on implementing the AFPHS 6Cs (based on the 6Cs Framework). Each session highlights specific examples within the 6Cs and how departments of health can make healthy aging a priority, one activity at a time.

: December 14, 2023

The December training focused on resources to support public health’s role in healthy aging. Webinar presenters were from the Association for State and Territorial Health Officials.

Vaccine Communication: November 16, 2023
The November training focused on vaccine communication for older adults. Speakers were part of the Public Health Communications Collaborative (PHCC), founded by the CDC Foundation, the de Beaumont Foundation, and Trust for America’s Health, PHCC provides resources and information to help public health communicators address misinformation using shareable graphics, social messaging, and other communication tools.

Connecting and Convening: October 19, 2023
The October training featured the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and highlighted the different roles for healthcare providers and state, local and tribal communities in implementing and delivering older adult fall prevention programs, how to communicate about fall prevention with older adults and caregivers, and fall prevention resources for all of these different audiences. It also included two examples of coordinating care among health partners to keep older adults injury-free.

Coordinating Existing Supports & Services: September 21, 2023
The September training focused on TFAH’s new brief, Ensuring Age-Friendly Public Health in Rural Communities: Challenges, Opportunities, and Model Programs, and highlighted recommendations in the brief on public health roles in promoting healthy aging and supporting older adults and caregivers in rural settings. Dr. Aaron Guest, primary author of the brief and Assistant Professor of Aging at Arizona State University, provided an overview of the recommendations and highlighted opportunities for public health to coordinate with existing services and supports.

Creating & Leading Change: August 17, 2023
The August AFPHS training focused on the newest version of MAPP, the new indicators guide, and highlight how one local jurisdiction is incorporating healthy aging in its community health improvement planning process.
Speakers included Anna Clayton, National Association of County and City Health Officials and Ryan Mims, Florida Department of Health in Walton County.

Communicating about Emergency Preparedness: July 20, 2023
The July AFPHS training highlighted the public health sector’s role in protecting older adults and their caregivers during emergencies, with a focus on communication.
Speakers included Matt McKillop, Senior Health Policy Researcher and Analyst, TFAH,
and Bethany Phenix-Osgood, Planning & Resource Director and Tribal Liaison, Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington.

Collecting, Analyzing, & Translating Data: June 15, 2023
The June training focused on collecting, analyzing, and translating data by highlighting data sources that provide information on the health of older adults. Speakers included Dr. Machell Town with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Kristen Robinson at the Administration for Community Living and Matthias Kirch at the Michigan Social Health Interventions to Eliminate Disparities.

    The May training focused on complementing existing health promoting programs. Speakers included Eric Weakly with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and a representative from a local health department implementing mental health services for older people.

    The April training focused on coordinating existing services and supports between the aging sector and public health. Speakers included the Regional Administrator from Region 10, which includes Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

    The March training focused on connecting and convening by bringing together vested partners to develop and implement multi-sector approaches to support the health of older adults.

    Create & Lead Change: February 16, 2023
    This session focused on how BOLD grantees use CDC grant funds to create and lead policy and systems changes and what strategies the Mississippi State Department of Health is using to advance an age-friendly eco-system in the state.

    Reframing Aging: Harnessing the Power of Our Words: January 19, 2023
    This session provided some new content and messaging to address ageism and how both public health and the aging services practitioners can combat it. Additional tools, strategies, and best practices to support organizations as they engage in efforts to improve older adult health and well-being were shared. Watch and share the recording.

    Health Equity, Social Determinants of Health, and the AFPHS 6C Framework
    December 15, 2022
    The December AFPHS provided guidance for public health practitioners to incorporate equitable healthy aging components within public health practices that address the social determinants of health, all in the context of the AFPHS 6Cs Framework. Watch and share the recording.

    TFAH created an "AFPHS Champion" designation to recognize public health professionals who have committed to building their own knowledge and expertise and have a desire to lead their departments in becoming age-friendly. The following is required to obtain AFPHS Champion recognition:

    • Attend at least six AFPHS Training sessions – Link to AFPHS Trainings
    • May include those trainings that have been previously recorded
    • At least one of the sessions must be on ageism
    • Becoming an AFPHS Champion will also meet the first requirement for health department Recognition
