Augmentation of Funds to the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholars Program (Cohorts V - VI
Grant Summary
This 1999 award to the Gerontological Society of America has been used to select and support Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholars to advance geriatric social work research and increase the number of educators and role models preparing future generations of social workers to serve the nation"s older adults. Three program components have been used to encourage career development: training in outcomes research and leadership skills, a career development plan with the support of local and national faculty sponsors, and two years of research support to study outcomes in community-based health practice settings. Thirty-nine scholars have received support since 2000 and the first ten scholars funded have published and presented widely and secured substantial research funds.Due to financial constraints in 2003, the prior renewal award had support for only 18 faculty scholar positions in three cohorts, despite the need for more faculty at the 149 graduate social work programs accredited in the United States. Therefore, this $1.8 million restoration will support up to 12 additional scholars in 2004 and 10 each in 2005 and 2006.Grant Details
