Center of Excellence Renewal University of Hawaii

Grant Summary

The John A. Hartford Foundation renewed six grants to increase the number of physician faculty dedicated to geriatrics. These grants allow academic health centers to provide support for fellows and junior faculty developing their careers in academic geriatrics as well as efforts to attract other medical school faculty to geriatric issues. The Hartford Foundation's Centers of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine program was founded in 1988 to meet the need for physician-faculty trained to prepare physicians in the health care needs of older adults. They have proven successful in increasing the number of academically-oriented physicians trained in geriatrics. In addition, these faculty have strengthened geriatrics at their institutions by obtaining additional funding for research and developing new ways to meet the health care needs of older adults.
