Hartford Center of Excellence Network Resource Center

Grant Summary

The Foundation's centers of excellence (CoEs) possess considerable capacity in recruiting and developing physician leaders in geriatrics. The Foundation approved a grant to the American Federation for Aging Research to develop and operate a Hartford CoE Network Resource Center. The center will facilitate the continued development of academic geriatric medicine and its practitioners by identifying and disseminating best practices in geriatrics recruitment and career development. Three sets of activities will be supported by this grant: 1) a best practices survey of CoE model programs, 2) three topical papers on current issues in academic geriatrics, and 3) a communications strategy to increase information exchange among the CoEs. The Hartford Foundation's centers of excellence in geriatric medicine program was founded in 1988 to meet the need for physician-faculty trained to prepare physicians in the health care needs of older adults. In 2004, two CoEs in geriatric psychiatry were added. The CoEs currently active have proven successful in increasing the number of academically-oriented physicians trained in geriatrics.
