Nursing Initiative Coordinating Center and Scholar Stipends American Academy of Nursing

Grant Summary

This grant to the American Academy of Nursing supports the continuation of its role operating the coordinating center for the John A. Hartford Foundation's Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative, which aims to prepare more nurses to care for older adults by increasing the nation's geriatric nursing faculty. Specifically, the grant will fund three rounds of competitive two-year awards for 45 pre-doctoral Hartford Scholars and 15 post-doctoral Claire M. Fagin Fellows (at yearly amounts of $50,000 and $60,000 respectively), who are training to become geriatric nursing faculty. An additional 19 Claire M. Fagin Fellows will be supported with funding from The Atlantic Philanthropies. The coordinating center oversees the recruitment, selection, and mentoring of these future academic leaders in geriatric nursing. Additionally, the coordinating center organizes annual leadership conferences for scholars, fellows, and other geriatric nurses to support their career development. The coordinating center will also manage a joint project of the nine Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence funded by the Hartford Foundation and the one Center funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation focused on the Nursing Care Blueprint for Older Americans in 2030. More information about the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Initiative, its coordinating center, the geriatric nursing faculty scholarship and fellowship program, and the Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence can be found at www.geriatricnursing.org.
