Restoration and Augmentation of Funds to the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Doctoral Fellows Program

Grant Summary

An award to the Gerontological Society of America in 2000 provided financial support to doctoral social work students for aging-related dissertation work. This grant has also provided mentorship and workshops to develop professional skills and create peer networks. As a key component of the Hartford Foundation"s Geriatric Social Work Initiative, this program has funded 19 doctoral students to date. Fellows who have completed their dissertations have been heavily recruited by schools of social work and are now, in their jobs as assistant professors, teaching future social workers and creating new knowledge about gerontological social work. Two fellowship slots have been restored and two additional slots created. Therefore, the program will be able to support up to ten doctoral fellows in its fourth cohort.
