Annals of Emergency Medicine Paper: An Outcome Comparison Between Geriatric and Nongeriatric Emergency Departments

Annals Of Emergency Medicine GEDA Publication

Annals of Emergency Medicine has published a paper studying the importance of accredited geriatric emergency departments (GEDs) by comparing geriatric syndrome diagnosis rates between GEDs and nongeriatric emergency departments (EDs).

The paper, "An Outcome Comparison Between Geriatric and Nongeriatric Emergency Departments," by Cameron J. Gettel, MD, MHS, et al., stems from the GED Guidelines published in 2014 and the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program launched by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) with support from JAHF and West Health.

The paper discusses findings that the diagnosis rates of four geriatric syndromes among GEDs is higher than nongeriatric EDs, and that GEDs had lower ED lengths of stay, and similar discharge and 72-hour revisit rates when compared with nongeriatric EDs. The paper provides the first benchmarks for emergency care process outcomes in GEDs compared with typical EDs.
