There is a growing need to strengthen the workforce that cares for older adults and individuals with disabilities at home — both paid direct care workers (DCWs) and unpaid family caregivers. While the COVID-19 pandemic shed new light on the importance of supporting the individuals caring for these populations, this workforce’s need for support is longstanding and will persist after the pandemic has ended.
Since strengthening supports for family caregivers and DCWs is increasingly a priority for states, payment mechanisms can help address these needs. This blog post outlines challenges facing family caregivers and DCWs and describes Medicaid payment strategies that can better support this workforce.
