CHCS Fact Sheet: LGBTQ+ Caregivers - Challenges, Policy Needs, and Opportunities for Foundations

CHCS Issue Brief LGBTQ Caregivers Challenges Policy Needs and Opportunities for Foundations title

The Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) has released a fact sheet, "LGBTQ+ Caregivers: Challenges, Policy Needs, and Opportunities for Foundations," along with a related blog, "Intersectionality in LGBTQ+ Family Caregiving."

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexual minority communities (LGBTQ+) have a rich history of caring for both biological and chosen family. Compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be primary caregivers, as well as more likely to provide care for friends and chosen family.

CHCS conducted a literature review and interviews with subject matter experts to understand the key challenges, policy needs, and opportunities for better supporting LGBTQ+ caregivers. The fact sheet summarizes those findings and includes recommendations for foundations interested in supporting efforts in this space.

A related blog, "Intersectionality in LGBTQ+ Family Caregiving," highlights multiple, intersecting barriers for LGBTQ+ caregivers—but also discusses emerging practices and policy solutions that can help level the field for LGBTQ+ caregivers, benefit their well-being, and improve the lives of their loved ones.
