This month, the 1,000th ABC patient was seen at Indiana's Wishard Healthy Aging Brain Center, the first facility to use the model. The center, which is both a research lab and a treatment facility focused on the mental status of older adults, has seen 45 percent reductions in hospital emergency department visits and 54 percent reductions in hospitalizations among patients treated at the center compared with those treated elsewhere. "Patients treated utilizing the ABC model have fewer behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia after one year than they had at the onset of treatment," said Dr. Boustani, medical director at Wishard and an associate professor of medicine at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. The innovative model was developed by researcher-clinicians from the medical school and the Regenstrief Institute.
