GEMCast: Geriatric Emergency Medicine Podcast Series 2025
GEMCast, the Geriatric Emergency Medicine podcast series, has released a new episode on "Delirium, Agitation, and the Role of POCUS in Older Adults in the ED."
GEMCast is a series of lectures on clinical topics to help physicians, trainees, nurses and paramedics who take care of older adults, particularly in the acute care setting.
In the seventh episode, "Delirium, Agitation, and the Role of POCUS in Older Adults in the ED," Dr. Kayla Furlong and Dr. Gillian Sheppard, both emergency medicine physicians in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, who are experts in point of care ultrasound (POCUS), joined host Dr. Christina Shenvi to discuss the importance of recognizing delirium, documenting it, and intervening where possible in the ED.
In the sixth episode, "ED Boarding of Older Adults: Risks and Opportunities," Dr. Maura Kennedy, MDH, MPH, joined host Dr. Christina Shenvi to discuss trends and risks of ED boarding, and strategies to minimize the harms associated with ED boarding of older adults.
In the fifth episode, "Getting ED Specific with Medication Safety," Dr. Rachel Skains joins Dr. Shenvi as the two dive into how to ensure the right medications are being prescribed to geriatric patients in the ED context.
In the fourth episode, "Precision Relief: Nerve Blocks for Pain in Older Patients," Dr. Robert Sternberg joins Dr. Shenvi to discuss ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for precise pain relief in older patients. Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks provide relief from one of the most common ED complaints: pain.
In the third episode, "Postmenopausal Problems: Geriatric Gynecology in the ED," Dr. Jennifer Wang joins Dr. Shenvi to discuss postmenopausal ED complaints and highlights key considerations for ED practitioners.
In the second episode, "Creating a Generational Health Program," Dr. Diane Wintz, Dr. Stacy Nilsen and Kelly Wright discuss the growing need for specialized care for older adults and talk about Sharp Memorial Hospital's 2019 pilot Generational Health Program. This program is now a highly successful multidisciplinary age-friendly collaboration, and the three experts from Sharp Memorial Hospital share how they’ve expanded it.
In the first episode of 2025, "High-Yield Overview of the CMS Age-Friendly Measures," Dr. Shenvi reviews each of the new CMS Age-Friendly Hospital Measure's five domains with Dr. Marcia Russell and applies it to the Geriatric Emergency Department.
