An increasing number of older adults in the rural areas of western New York are facing challenges that impact their ability to access the health care they need and age in place within their communities. These challenges not only include a lack of financial resources and transportation, but also a shortage in the number of health care workers in rural western New York.
With a limited number of specialist physicians, and few, if any geriatricians practicing in the region, primary care providers often do it all. But to help them provide better support to their geriatric patients, they need additional training.
