Hartford Grantees in New York Times on Home Care in Hospitals’ Palliative Care Programs

Hartford Grantees Dr. Diane E. Meier and Dr. R. Sean Morrison of Mt. Sinai Hospital were recently mentioned in the New York Times Business Section about the integration of home care visits into some hospitals’ palliative care program.

Hartford Grantees Dr. Diane E. Meier and Dr. R. Sean Morrison of Mt. Sinai Hospital were recently mentioned in the New York Times Business Section about the integration of home care visits into some hospitals’ palliative care program.

Although palliative care exists within hospital settings, having home care available to patients have been a selling point for hospitals using palliative care teams to address patients’ needs, according to Dr. Morrison. In addition to providing better treatment and lowering costs, palliative care teams “provide an added layer of support for people living with serious illness,” said Dr. Meier.

In a 2011 article featured in the Milbank Quarterly, Dr. Meier also noted that palliative care “may be associated with a significant prolongation of life for some patient populations” as well.
