Trends in Medicaid Home And Community-Based Services Waivers for Older Adults
Meghan M. Skira, Sijiu Wang and R. Tamara Konetzka
State Medicaid programs have extended the use of home and community-based services, particularly through Section 1915 (c) waivers and Section 1115 demonstration waivers. The authors of the article document trends from 1997-2022 in waivers targeting older adults, focusing on services offered. Nearly every service category saw an increase in coverage and spending, especially support for self-direction and community transition.
The Impact Of COVID-19 On The Health Of Incarcerated Older Adults In California State Prisons
Ada Kwan, Ilana Garcia-Grossman, David Sears, Stefano M. Bertozzi and Brie A. Williams
Ada Kwan and coauthors compare COVID-19 outcomes between older and younger adults in California state prisons between March 1, 2020 and October 9, 2021 to investigate COVID-19's impact on incarcerated older adults. Researchers found that although older adults made up 17.3% of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR) population, they represented 85.8% of COVID-19 related deaths in California state prisons. The authors suggest revising equitable strategies that respond to such risks in a timely manner, such as considering releasing older adults from prison.
