The Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine (JGEM) has published a supplement article, "Older Adults With COVID-19: Special Considerations for Refusal of Admission and Alternate Care Plans."
The challenge of balancing a patient's wishes with the provision of excellent clinical care when the patient wants to leave the emergency department against medical advice has become more complex with COVID-19. In this article, Danya Khoujah, MBBS, MEHP, et al share strategies for creating a patient-centered disposition plan and mitigating the negative consequences of leaving against medical advice as well as alternative care delivery models outside of the hospital.
