Journal of The American Geriatrics Society: Articles on Geriatrics Education for Physicians
The October issue of the Journal of The American Geriatrics Society includes two articles on geriatric medicine, written in response to Mary Tinetti's June 2016 article Mainstream or Extinction: Can Defining Who We Are Save Geriatrics?
The 2025 Big “G” Geriatrician: Defining Job Roles to Guide Fellowship Training, Deborah Simpson et al., and Big ‘G’ and Little ‘g’ Geriatrics Education for Physicians, Kathryn E. Callahan et al., both investigate the issue of geriatric medicine education, it's history and address the need for more trained geriatricians.
Callahan mentions The John A. Hartford Foundation's role in geriatric education, "....D.W. Reynolds, John A. Hartford, Veteran’s Administration, and Health Resources and Services Administration initiatives have improved geriatrics knowledge...."
Several JAHF-supported programs are cited, including the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) program, and The Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP).
