The John A. Hartford Foundation Board of Trustees has approved funding for two grants totaling $3,637,215 to help emergency departments detect and prevent elder abuse and to improve surgical care for older adults.

American College of Surgeons (ACS): Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) Phase II - Evaluation and Improvement ($1,987,215 for 3 years)

The Geriatric Surgery Verification Program is designed to ensure appropriate, safe, high-quality surgical care for older adults aligned with what matters most to them. This project will evaluate content, implementation and outcomes of the new verification program to foster broad dissemination to diverse sites, including rural settings and safety net hospitals. The project team will also work with experts and stakeholder groups to incorporate palliative care standards into the program to better meet the needs of older surgical patients with serious illness.

Education Development Center (EDC): National Collaboratory to Address Elder Mistreatment - Expanding the Impact of the Elder Mistreatment Emergency Department Toolkit
($1,650,000 for 3 years)

One in 10 older adults is affected by elder abuse, neglect or other forms of mistreatment. The Elder Mistreatment Emergency Department Toolkit, developed and tested by a leading team of national experts, detects and prevents elder abuse through screening protocols in emergency departments. The National Collaboratory to Address Elder Mistreatment will help at least 45 hospitals integrate the toolkit into their regular workflow, promote wider adoption through national partnerships, host policy convenings and develop leaders in the prevention of elder mistreatment.
